What harmonica

[edit]

Where is "Sarah" and "With Love" is there *any* harmonica let alone Hewy Lewis playing it? 86.30.183.33 (talk) 23:46, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

On "Sarah", the harmonica starts at 0:05 and occasionally runs alongside the keyboards in the background. It's harder to hear on "With Love" as it's buried in the mix at the end. Bretonbanquet (talk) 00:37, 20 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Black rose medley

[edit]

What is the reference for "The Mason's Apron" being the last part of the medley? It's clearly Rakish Paddy when the two pieces of music are compared. The album does not appear to have any liner notes on the subject. 2600:4808:6171:9B00:C91:7827:2480:4D14 (talk) 18:30, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It's on the labels of the vinyl records. The individual pieces of the medley aren't mentioned on the sleeves, as far as I know. I also have two book sources for "The Mason's Apron" (Byrne and Popoff), although I haven't looked for others. No source I've ever read mentions "Rakish Paddy", unless you have one? Bretonbanquet (talk) 21:59, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting - would love to see pictures of the labels. Since there's no reference I assumed someone was just trying to fill in the blanks. 2600:4808:6171:9B00:C91:7827:2480:4D14 (talk) 23:53, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
So I checked the record's track listing (as per side 2 of the disc) - it does indeed say "The Mason's Apron", so the article is accurate as to the source.
As to why they listed that (technically incorrect) title, I'd have to guess there was some confusion on the part of the label/distributor. Not that it'll move the needle for the article, but studying the piece shows that melody is very clearly taken from Rakish Paddy. I am not the only one to arrive at this conclusion (see [1] this discussion on an Irish music forum; additionally compare the music for Rakish Paddy here [2] to the Thin Lizzy record starting at 4:00 [3], almost note-for-note (with some artistic flourishes) following the same implied chord structure and harmonic rhythm; contrast that w/ the Mason's Apron [4] which has an entirely different rhythmic and harmonic structure.
In any case as previously stated, the track listing of "The Mason's Apron" is accurate as per the written record. Cheers! 2600:4808:6171:9B00:755D:3793:F143:9178 (talk) 05:41, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If any reliable source can be found for the possible mix-up, whether on the part of the record company (likely, as you say), management or Lynott/Moore (seems unlikely from what I know of them) and the reasons for it, then it should be added, for sure. Cheers, Bretonbanquet (talk) 21:00, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
All this could be clearly sorted if people only cared to listen to the song, rather than needing citations and so on. Who is a reliable source? To me it is someone who knows the melody of Rakish Paddy well and can identify it in Black Rose. 2404:4408:6A7C:7500:EDF8:7B89:17FF:7F6C (talk) 10:32, 19 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
